UNWTO Best Tourism Village, 2021
Best Tourism Villages is a global initiative by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a part of the United Nations.
The project aims to reward villages where tourism preserves culture, celebrates diversity, creates opportunities, and protects the ecosystem. In line with these values, at Sustain Awards, we have designed these recognitions.
In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the World Tourism Organization's initiative sought to appreciate the work of places that had adopted innovative and transformative tourism approaches in rural areas.
It is an honor to be part of this project that aims to make tourism a positive force for transformation and rural development for the well-being of communities. The initiative aims to maximize the sector's contribution to reducing regional inequalities and combating depopulation of areas.
The awards also promote the role of tourism in valuing and preserving villages and their landscapes, knowledge, biological and cultural diversity, as well as local values and activities, not to mention gastronomy. For Sustain Awards, participating in this project was exciting as it contributes to an initiative with a clear socio-transformative character.
In the latest edition, the initiatives of 44 villages from 32 countries in the five regions of the world were recognized.
